ChatGPT Wrote Me a Crochet Pattern

When I saw a few TikToks about crocheters and other fiber artists using AI to write patterns, my interest was piqued.

I have written a few simple crochet patterns throughout the years, but they’re not my favorite aspect of running a crochet business. So, the thought of outsourcing this type of work to a robot seems slightly appealing, if unethical.

I guess it all depends on your personal opinion about AI. Mine’s always changing.

Anyway. I decided to hop on the bandwagon and try my hand at generating an AI-written crochet pattern.

The results were surprising.

Look at that cutie! Not half-bad for a chatbot pattern, right? I have named them AILIEN.

I wrote the prompt a few months ago when I was still pretty new to the whole ChatGPT craze. Here’s what I asked:

chat gpt prompt

“Write a crochet pattern for a green alien riding in a silver UFO. Make the pattern an intermediate level pattern.”

I have gained more experience writing ChatGPT prompts since I completed this project. If I did this exercise today, I may have included some more information.

Regardless, ChatGPT was able to generate a pretty solid crochet pattern. The pattern is more “beginner” than “intermediate,” in my opinion. But it’s not half bad!

The “spaceship” came out way smaller than the actual alien. It’s more of a space pebble than anything else.

Also, I didn’t add the legs to my AILIEN because I thought they looked pretty cute without them.

So, here’s the ChatGPT crochet pattern! I’ve copied + pasted the pattern as-is if you want to make your own AILIEN (crochet AI alien) and tiny “spaceship” (lol).
